Media is used to entertain, to persuade and to inform. However, with the commercialization of mainstream media, many practitioners underestimate their responsibility to inform and educate their audiences.

The UP Broadcasters' Guild, a non-stock, non-profit, socio-civic organization based in the UP Diliman College of Mass Communication, aims to promote the responsible use of mass media as a tool for education. For more than eight years, BroadGuild has furthered its cause through various forums and symposiums.

As part of the organization's 9th anniversary celebration this February, BroadGuild will be hosting another symposium on GMA 7’s hit television series Marimar and its impact on the Filipino audience.

Its most recent symposiums include a symposium on Pinoy Big Brother and Dream Weavers: the realization of dreams in the show 'Pinoy Dream Academy,' where production staff members and contestants from the hit reality shows talked about what went on behind the scenes and their experiences while shooting.

Last semester, the organization hosted Let's talk about balls: a symposium on sportscasting. Guests were sportscasters and commentators of the PBA, Richard del Rosario, Mico Halili and Dominic Uy. Students were given a chance to commentate for a mock-basketball game, learned more about the work involved in sportscasting, and heard the guests' two-cents' worth on the future of sportscasting in the Philippines. The symposium was done in cooperation with the College of Mass Communication Student Council as part of their CMC-Learn series.a

Earlier this month, the organization participated in the university-wide Alternative Classroom Learning Experience of the University of the Philippines’ Student Council with a workshop on dubbing for Filipino television. "Voice Master" Pocholo Gonzales and Benjie Dorango, both respected voice artists and directors in the field of dubbing, graced the event.

Other celebratory activities are the grand luncheon, photo exhibit, freebie day, Ignite and Destino, the landmark event of the organization.

Symposiums, activities and events of BroadGuild are open to all students in the university and not only those from the College of Mass Communication.

BroadGuild has produced a roster of graduates that have penetrated the media industry through print, radio, television and new media, and have gone on to become successful in their chosen fields.
