COMDDAP EXPO 2006 supports software developers, technology SMEs

The Computer Manufacturers, Distributors and Dealers Association of the Philippines (COMDDAP) will provide a venue for software companies and other small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to promote their technologies at the annual COMDDAP Expo.

COMDDAP plans to put up a software pavilion at the country's biggest technology and computer event on October 5-8 at the COMDDAP Tent, which will be built for the second time on the seven-hectare concert area of the Fort Global City in Taguig City.

Open to local software developers, manufacturers, programmers and designers, graphics design agencies and other technology entrepreneurs, the software pavilion will be part of 1,500sq.m. of exhibit space within the 3,600-sq.m. COMDDAP Tent, the largest customized exhibition venue of its kind that will house about 200 booths measuring anywhere from 12sq.m. to 54sq.m.

"Having done this in our past exhibitions, we'll continue supporting startup technology companies in selling their products to the market," said COMDDAP president Juan G. Chua.

According to Chua, software exhibitors at the expo's "software alley" will get a subsidized rate of P10,000 for every six square meters of space.

Some 40,000 visitors, mostly from trade and professional sectors, come to COMDDAP Expo to upgrade their systems or buy new equipment. The expo began in 1986 and has become the country's longest-running and market-driven computer trade show.

"SMEs themselves form a growing and vibrant information and communications technology (ICT) market, which upgrades technology requirements to be more productive and competitive," Chua said.

Accounting for over 90 percent of some 900,000 existing enterprises in the country today, only 30,000 SMEs use ICT, based on available data from the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT).

Research group International Data Corporation (IDC) Philippines forecast local IT spending this year to reach US.56 billion, 66.5 percent of which will go to hardware, 23.2 to services and 10.3 to software. IT spending last year by SMEs alone in the Asia Pacific region reached US825 billion, according to another market research.

COMDDAP treasurer and event chairperson Gigi Ngui said the COMDDAP expo is more responsive to market needs by both mass and corporate consumers, including SMEs, as the expo becomes a one-stop ICT shop encouraging interaction between buyers and sellers to come up with tailor-fit solutions to ICT concerns.

"Our theme 'See IT, Use IT, Buy IT' reflects this. Consumers can actually test the technologies they would need or tinker with the products, get technical advice from exhibitors and buy them at marked down prices," Ngui said.

A non-stock, non-profit industry association, COMDDAP counts among its 45 members leading local ICT players and affiliates of global leaders Borther, Canon, Epson, Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft and Toshiba.

Inquiries may be forwarded to Gina Dimayuga through COMDDAP secretariat hotline 810.3814 and 892.7947 or email ginavildim@comddap.org and exhibit@comddap.org.

Manila FAME International Promotes Innovative Designs From SMEs

Start:     Oct 17, '06 01:00a
End:     Oct 20, '06
Location:     Hall 3 Philippine International Convention Center Forum
Manila FAME International Promotes Innovative Designs From SMEs

To make a strong impact in the international market, one must never underestimate the value of good design, quality production, and competitive pricing. This has always been the guiding principle of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions agency of the Philippines’ Department of Trade and Industry in staging Manila F.A.M.E. International, its bi-annual trade show on housewares, furnishings, holiday décor, and fashion accessories.

CITEM has successfully staged 42 editions of the show in the last 23 years, and attracted thousands of buyers worldwide by unveiling innovative products season after season. This has spurred the growth of Philippine exports, eventually carving a niche for the country in the global design arena. Manila FAME is scheduled on 19-22 April and 17-20 October 2006.

Remarkable accomplishments as they are, CITEM management readily acknowledges that it is the assistance it has given to thousands of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that makes Manila F.A.M.E. International a more noteworthy endeavor.

Since it was launched in 1983, Manila F.A.M.E. International has introduced thousands of local entrepreneurs, most with little or no experience in the export business, into the international trade fair circuit.

According to Trade Assistant Secretary Fe Agoncillo-Reyes, “Manila FAME is not just an opportunity for the country to showcase its new design ideas for the international market; it is also a venue to boost opportunities for our SMEs by tapping into their creativity and exporting potential.”

Manila FAME International helped these SMEs

Makvel Enterprises is one of the long-time and most successful exhibitors of Manila F.A.M.E. It pioneered the production of colorful lanterns made of capiz, which it now exports to the USA, Asia, and Europe.

Its president and general manager, Virgilio Sanchez, readily gives credit to CITEM for all the company has achieved. “CITEM opened a lot of doors for me. When I was just starting, they persuaded me to join Manila F.A.M.E., and eventually other trade shows in the U.S., Europe and Australia.”

With much help from CITEM, he founded the Christmas Décor Association in 1987 (and was president for 7 years), which paved the way for a huge growth in the export of holiday décor. “When we started the association, total exports for the sub-sector was just about U$6 Million; a little over a decade later, the country was exporting a total of U$120 Million to the global market.” Today, Makvel Enterprises continues to be one of Manila F.A.M.E. International’s most loyal exhibitors, and staunch supporters of the Philippine holiday décor industry.

Renato Vidal, owner of First Binhi Crafts, also readily acknowledges the vital role CITEM has played in the success he has achieved. The company has been participating in Manila F.A.M.E. International since 1989, and continues to be one of the top-selling exhibitors at the fair. It now exports to countries in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and key cities in the USA. Its exposure to new designs and market trends via its participation in trade shows held abroad (which CITEM organized) has enabled First Binhi Crafts to win several international awards, including the UNESCO-AHPADA Seal of Excellence.

GSG Industries, a successful company that pioneered the production of handmade paper in the country, also got its big break from CITEM. Designed in a wide range of colors that is reminiscent of Filipino fiestas, GSG’s handmade papers are rich in textures of abaca, salago, mango and tamarind leaves, and madre de cacao, among others.

A few months after the company was established, GSG joined the 1st Papel Likhang Kamay organized by CITEM and the Federation of Handmade Paper Makers and Converters (FEHPA), where it received many orders. The initial success of this undertaking prompted GSG to join the Premiere Paperworld Fair in Frankfurt, Germany in 1993 with the help of CITEM. Following the success of their first international fair participation, GSG joined Manila F.A.M.E. International in the same year. This started a whirlwind of activities for the company and more than a decade of relationship with foreign buyers from all over the world. At present, the company employs 150 people in its operations, maintenance, and production divisions.

With Manila F.A.M.E. International, there is greater chance for small handicrafts companies whose products could be the new toasts of buyers to finally break into the export market.

“And it works both ways,” says Agoncillo-Reyes. “The companies get their much-deserved break and buyers take home a good find. The beauty of joining Manila F.A.M.E. International is that it empowers SMEs, giving them the opportunity to grow by working with their innate strengths.”

As the buying season for the best finds commence this April, the offerings of this edition’s Manila F.A.M.E. International exhibitors will get their well-deserved international exposure, and it definitely won’t be long until their products will be shipped worldwide and take pride of place in international homes.

4th Annual Manila Comics Creation Seminar on October 14-15
UPDATE : Saturday, September 30, 2006

Calling all comics readers and enthusiast! Do you want to learn how to draw, color, edit and write like your favorite comics creator? Then grab this opportunity to become a comics creator yourself. Join the 4th Annual Manila Comics Creation Seminar and learn from the best local and international comic artists of Glass House Graphics like David Campiti, Jeffrey Huet, Jonathan Lau, Carlo Pagulayan, Stephen Segovia, Harvey Tolibao, Wilson Tortosa, Tina Francisco, Jinky Coronado and others.

Many young Filipinos have tried creating their own comics yet some of them have very few readers. In this seminar, speakers will teach you not only how to draw the right way but also how to market your comics creations. Turn your comics from ordinary to marvelously extra-ordinary.

The Manila Comics Creation Seminar has been running even before comic-based movies and television shows became popular again. For three years, they've helped young comics creators further their knowledge and skills. This two-day seminar includes modules in anatomy, layout and story telling, perspective, manga styles, coloring, inking, penciling, and selling your comics to editors and publishers. History of comics and the do’s and donts in this field plus many other topics will also be discussed.

The seminar will also have a forum discussion with guest artists who will share their experiences and give inspirational lectures for the young and upcoming comics creators. There will be comic booth selling of new and back issue copies of favorite popular titles, sponsors’ booth exhibiting their comic related items, live modeling and drawing activity, raffle draws, comics-based film showings like Stan Lee’s Who wants to be a Super Hero, comic art sharing and many other exciting activities for the two-day seminar.

The comics seminar will give recognition to the talents and artistry of two known comics creators who gave a significant contribution to the international comics industry. Nick Manabat and Alfredo Alcala Legacy Art Exhibit will stand at the event for two days.

Mr. David Campiti , international writer (Superman, Jade Warriors, Angel Heat, Exposure, etc . ), editor, publisher and global talent agent, will spearhead the instructional art convention and will conduct a one-on-one portfolio review, and talent search. Campiti will choose lucky participants to join in their international team of professional comics artists. Glasshouse Graphics Inc., represents an impressive pool of talents of over 100 worldwide, led by Brazilian artists Mike Deodato ( penciler of Spider-Man, Batman, Wonder Woman etc., ) and Luke Ross ( penciler of Uncanny X-Men, Lost in Space, etc .); and Filipino artists in the name of Wilson Tortosa ( penciler of Battle of the Planets, Tomb Raider, etc. ), Carlo Pagulayan ( penciler of Elektra, Emma Frost, etc .) and a many more artists known for their exceptional talents in the field of Arts and Comic Book illustration.
